Wrought iron fence installation is putting in a heavy-duty, custom metal fence system, traditionally forged or welded steel designed for maximum durability and a premium, ornamental look. Unlike aluminum, which is lightweight and mass-produced, true wrought iron work is heavier, more substantial, and often custom-fabricated to match specific architectural styles or property features, which makes it the choice for homeowners who want a genuinely high-end, built-to-last fence.
This is the right fit if you're looking for a statement fence for a period home or upscale property where the ornamental detail actually matters, if you want maximum security and durability that outlasts lighter metal or wood options by decades, or if you're restoring or matching an existing wrought iron fence or gate on an older property where off-the-shelf aluminum simply won't match the character. Custom gates, arches, and decorative elements are also common reasons homeowners choose iron over other metal options.
We start with a design consultation to understand the style, height, and any custom elements you want, since wrought iron work is often more bespoke than standard panel fencing. Posts get set in concrete at proper depth for the weight of iron fencing, which is significantly heavier than aluminum and needs a solid foundation. Panels are installed section by section, welded or bolted according to the design, and any custom gates or decorative elements are fitted and hung last. We finish with a protective coating to guard against rust, since iron needs this protection in a way aluminum doesn't.
Cost is generally higher than aluminum given the weight of material, the often-custom fabrication involved, and the labor required for a heavier installation. Linear footage, height, level of ornamental detail, and any custom gate work all factor into the final price. Properties in Old Lyme, CT with historic character or unique architectural style often invest in custom iron work specifically because standard fencing doesn't match.
